A superb first time application from this family run recruitment, training and care provider. The committee were impressed with the company’s approach to supporting the local community, something they have done for many years as can be evidenced by the charity work section on their website:  All managers, senior managers and directors are actively involved in charity projects, and all members of staff are encouraged to get involved. The company also employs two full-time apprentices.

This is the fourth Gold Award in succession for Gleneagles Guest House. Owners Garry and Penny Lowen are well-know for their community support which includes, but is not limited to, providing meeting facilities free of charge to many charities and community groups;  Garry is Chair and actively involved in both Southend Carnival and the Southend Mayor’s Charity, as well as sitting on several other boards and steering groups.

A first time application for this company which helps support older people to live independently in their own homes. Proprietor Niven’s commitment to the local community is quite apparent and includes providing free workshops on dementia for the general public, and giving two members of staff paid time off to help deliver dementia training.  In the last twelve months, Niven has worked hard to encourage his employees to engage in community projects and has also employed two apprentices.

MD Trevor Williams has been a trustee of Age Concern Southend (ACSOS) for about 8 years, and in the last 12 months his main focus has been supporting ACSOS’s ambitious plans to develop the Havens Building in Hamlet Court Road as a Community Hub. He also sponsors local youth rugby teams and gets involved in many fundraising activities with Southend Peers. Throughout the year he supports many charities with small donations and regularly attends Double Whammy events.

Jo and Jon of Lollipop Local, a small digital marketing agency in Leigh-on-Sea, are passionate about supporting education and employment for young people. Their small team includes a much-valued full-time employee who was a previous apprentice, a local graduate, and a more recent apprentice. They have also provided work experience to two Westcliff High School students in the last 12 months.

The committee were particularly impressed with the amount of pro bono work carried out by the company for several Southend-based charities and community groups, including a complete rebrand for Southend in Sight (formerly Southend Blind Welfare Organisation)

This small digital marketing company based in Leigh-on-Sea has a strong focus on supporting young people, offering work experience and apprenticeship opportunities. Lollipop Local also support a local charity by providing first class services at a nominal rate.

This is the first application from Green Light and the committee were unanimous in agreeing a Gold Award. Green Light is a small company based in Shoebury providing print and print related services. An embedded culture of supporting the local community is embraced by directors and staff, with a high level involvement with Southend Round Table being the focus of much of the engagement. Apart from involvement in many fundraising and youth mentoring activities, the company provides several local charities with free or discounted goods and services. The small team is also enhanced by an apprentice who is close to being offered full-time employment.

For the second year in succession, Summercare have achieved a Gold Award. Led by CEO, Dr Asif Raja, the company continues to show a huge commitment to supporting an inclusive society. Summercare is the main sponsor of the Southend SummerCare Carnival and apart from considerable financial support, Dr Raja and his whole team are actively involved in volunteering and fundraising activities, with a particular focus on ensuring events are accessible for children and adults with learning difficulties.

The Gleneagles Guesthouse is a fine example of how a small business, with just the equivalent of 5 full time staff, can make a real difference in their community. The Charter Committee was delighted to confirm a Gold Charter Award for the second year in succession.

The business partners, Penny & Garry Lowen, are well known in the local community for the support they give to the Southend Carnival and the Mayor’s Charity Fund. Garry chairs both committees and both Garry and Penny are pro-actively involved in organising, attending and hosting events. The couple continue to support the Hungarian Community of Southend which they help set up and encourage their Hungarian staff to volunteer their time to this community group too. Other staff also volunteered for fundraising events such as the Ice Rink and the Beer Festival. The couple also support the local community as much as possible by using an extensive list of local suppliers; and Garry supports young people through mentoring programmes.

Moredge Hydrotherapy also continues to actively support charities and good causes, particularly those that are animal based.  

Jacqui Fry has clearly demonstrated that nurturing young people is not only good for the community, it is also an excellent business growth strategy.

Our Charter Committee were delighted to approve a GOLD Charter Award for Oracle Publications UK Ltd.

Oracle publishes a community magazine and designs websites for businesses, but has gone above and beyond their day job in general and specifically with the small team of 4 delivering a huge project in aid of HARP, Southend's Homeless Charity. The Cooking-on-Sea recipe book took ten months of planning, designing and promoting and to date has raised over £3600 for the charity! All proceeds from the sale of the book, which includes favourite recipes from local people, go to HARP; funds were also raised at the "Launch Event" in November attended by 115 people.

The team have supported numerous other charities and community causes over the last year including publishing articles free of charge in the monthly magazine, organising a fundraising raffle for the Mayor's Charity Fund and designing a website for a charity free of charge.

The directors have demonstrated an admirable commitment to the local community and have donated much personal time to their chosen causes. Awareness of the issue of Youth Employment in our area has led to one of the directors setting up a networking group particularly to address this concern, with some early success!

A very well deserved GOLD award - congratulations to all at Oracle!

Local accountants RDP Newmans (Southend) have renewed their Southend Business & Community Charter Award and achieved a GOLD level, by demonstrating the development of a clear long term strategy for community support and engaging their team in the process from planning to implementation.

They have chosen to support The Music Man Project through to the end of 2016 and have scheduled a full timetable of fundraising events. Staff have been encouraged to contribute ideas and participate at each occasion, with a small committee set up to meet regularly to discuss up-coming events and feedback to their colleagues. A quiz night, name the bear competition and a Christmas campaign to collect Musical instruments, which were presented to the beneficiaries at a lunch, have already proved successful! Rather than having a Secret Santa in the office for Christmas 2015, the team used the funds to buy musical instruments to add to the collected donations.

Many business services are supplied by local businesses and the firm offer regular work experience and take on a young trainee each year.

The committee look forward to seeing the planned event schedule come to fruition and congratulate RDP Newmans for their hard work and commitment in the last 12 months to achieve GOLD!

Rossi Ice Cream has been established in Southend for over 80 years and with a well known brand, the management take great pride in their involvement with our local community, and are keen to promote the town wherever possible.

As well as donating free Ice -Cream to numerous charities and community events, the directors, senior management and other team members are all enthusiastic to be attending charity events and are fully involved in the preparation of the Rossi float for the Southend Carnival Procession and collecting funds on the day, with over £600 collected for Southend Relay for life in 2015. Rossi are a sponsor for the Southend SummerCare Carnival.

Rossi Bear often visits charities and sick children and stars at Educational Road Shows, accompanied by various members of the team.

To support youth employment the senior team from Rossi visit many local secondary schools and colleges to present on topics such as business studies, food manufacturing and catering.

The company also sources many of their business services from local companies.

10 25th November 2015 Park Inn Palace Hotel Gold

Park Inn Palace Hotel is situated in a prominent seafront location and offers 3* facilities including 137 rooms, bar, restaurant, 7 meeting rooms and a large ballroom. The hotel is managed by Carlson Rezidor Group, who have a strong CSR strategy, including choosing a world-wide charity to support each year. However, the Charter Committee was delighted to see a large number of fundraising activities and variety of engagement with the Southend community, driven by the local team, in addition to the central initiatives, and were pleased to approve a GOLD Charter Award!

From donating surplus bedding to HARP, holding a Princess Tea Party for sick children, giving free room hire and subsidising refreshment costs for various local charities and community groups, holding coffee mornings, to selling merchandise for charities at reception, the team of approx 36 are all encouraged to participate. Staff are able to put their own proposals forward for helping causes dear to them, knowing that the Senior management team will be supportive.

Despite the Corporate ownership, it is wonderful to see the number of local businesses Park Inn Palace use for their supplies. Food, furnishings, event management and social media support to name but a few.

The management team have developed valuable links with several local schools, colleges and charities and the Sales Manager, Louise, frequently offers careers advice to their Hotel and Catering functions. The hotel offers opportunities for apprenticeships, work experience and mock interviews for young people and others.

The Park Inn Palace team should be very proud of the support they give to our community and their well deserved GOLD Charter Award.

The huge commitment to inclusion for all and enriching the local community demonstrated by the CEO, Dr Asif Raja and right through the team at SummerCare, has been recognised by a GOLD Charter award. 
Since 2011, SummerCare a Southend based national award winning social care provider of HomeCare, Day opportunities, Supported Living and Residential care have been the main sponsors of the Southend SummerCare Carnival.  Along with the financial commitment, a great deal of time, effort and organisational skill is given from across their team, to ensure the various Carnival events can be enjoyed by all and their experience is improved year on year.
In addition, the employees participate in many other fundraising and volunteering activities, from monthly coffee mornings to running a football team for adults with learning difficulties, (to name just two), which are encouraged and supported by Dr Raja and management team. Even though staff work at different locations, communication is strong and they all understand SummerCare's strategy of community engagement and feel involved with this important work. 
SummerCare also supports youth employment by offering IT apprenticeships and social care work experience at the head office; and regular recruitment days are held in the Westcliff Head office to attract local staff.
The application was extremely rounded and robust and the Charter Committee unanimously agreed a Gold Award was well deserved.

8 17th September 2015 Blatella Films Silver

Partners Ben and Natalie Scarsbrook of Blatella Films have given a great amount of time and skill over the last 12 months to many charities and youth projects to deliver high quality films. The films have provided great promotional material for these local causes which they otherwise would not have had.  
Our Charter Committee were very happy to agree a Silver Award for Blatella Films, who demonstrated  good  local community engagement with their pro bono work, strong use of Southend based suppliers  and their efforts to help youth employment.  Whilst Blatella is not in a position to offer an apprenticeship position or similar currently, their support for Rochford Young Entrepreneurs Project and participation in the 60 Minute Mentor Program, shows their commitment to helping the local issue of youth employment.
Congratulations on a well deserved Silver Award!

The partners, Penny & Garry, are involved with the Mayor’s Charity Fund, organising, attending and hosting events. Garry is the driving force behind the Southend Carnival Committee which helps ensure this much loved event not only continues but goes from strength to strength. The couple have also been instrumental in the set- up and success of the Hungarian Community of Southend, encouraging their Hungarian staff to volunteer their time to this community group too.
With local staff, local suppliers, an apprentice in place and the community engagement from their small team, the Charter Committee was delighted to confirm a Gold Charter Award

The Hood Group has been providing insurance solutions to the big known brands for over 30 years, and even though their marketplace is B2B, the committee were very impressed to see the huge effort made to encourage their 200 local staff, to support the Southend community.
They have a dedicated internal "Neighbourhood Team" which plans regular activities throughout the year, raising funds for local charities - all causes picked by the staff.
Along with their apprenticeship scheme, the Hood Group support Youth employment with work experience, interview skills, and mentoring through the Career Academy at King Edmund School.

Moredge Canine Hydrotherapy Centre have retained the GOLD Business and Community Charter Award for a second year. They are the perfect example of how a small business can go above and beyond to contribute to their local community.
This includes creating amazing training and employment opportunities to contribute to young people's futures through apprenticeships as well as numerous work experience placements. On top of this the business actively supports local charities and canine specific charities all year round.
Moredge scored highly in all aspects of the Charter application and, for such a tiny company, really are quite inspirational.

Wave Data look to make a difference on a global scale as well as within their local Southend Community. On top of supporting local charities, students and start up companies they are also incredibly environmentally conscious and have made considerable changes to their business to be more efficient. Support is also given to international charities in Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe all year round. Wave Data is a company with brilliant principles in place and the directors are already looking to see how they can improve community engagement in Southend.

The committee were impressed with Rossi Ice Cream's overall commitment to community support which involved the wholeteam including owner and managers. Support included, but was not limited to, free ice cream provided to numerous charities and community groups (Little Havens enjoys free Rossi ice cream all year round!); pro-active involvement in fundraising events such as Race for Life; educational road shows for schools; and work experience opportunities.

RDP Newmans Southend scored highest in the Youth Employment section of the award application, showing a clear commitment to the agenda by providing work experience opportunities and offering Apprenticeships. Three current fulltime members of staff were apprentices who continued with the firm into further studies. Partners of the firm are also personally engaged in supporting the local community.

The Committee said: "We are delighted to award the first Business and Community Charter Award to Moredge Canine Hydrotherapy Centre. The company epitomises how even a very tiny company can have a sinificant impact on the local community. We were particularly impressed with proprieter Jacqui Fry's approch to supporting young people: she offers work experience on an ongoing basis and her full time employee was previously an apprentice. The Gold Awward is very well deserved." Jacqui Fry was presented with her Award Certificate on the 15th April 2014 by Cllr Brian Kelly, the Worshipful the Mayor of Southend.
